Science Centre School
What
is it?
At Science Centre
School, teachers choose a topic from the
Alberta Science Curriculum as a basis for
a long-term study. This topic serves as the
focus for an interdisciplinary study that
includes the week at the Calgary Science
Centre.
Students receive the most benefit
from their experience in this program if the basic science
concepts are introduced at school and the week at the Science
Centre is used to reinforce and enrich learning. Possible
topics include:
Grade
One / Two
A week of engaging hands-on
activities covering key concepts in the grade one or grade
two science curriculum
Grade
Three
1. Structures
2. Hearing and Sound
Grade
Four
1. Wheels and Levers / Building
Devices and Vehicles that Move
2. Light and Shadow
Grade
Five
1. Electricity and Magnetism
/ Mechanisms Using Electricity
2. Wetlands Ecosystems
Grade
Six
1. Sky Science
2. Air and Aerodynamics / Flight
What
does Science Centre School Offer?
Exploration
in Exhibits
Planning the use of exhibits
is a perplexing task for teachers because the exhibits relate
to so many science topics, and because exhibits change throughout
the year. The most successful way to approach exhibits is
like a scientist discovering new ideas. Children are encouraged
to observe, explore and find out for themselves. They are
then given time to reflect their thoughts and ideas through
writing and drawing in their journals.
Experts
The use of experts is an important aspect to the program.
Experts may include astronomers, designers, artists, engineers,
musicians, and are chosen based on curriculum objectives of
individual teachers.
Staff Involvement
The staff at Science Centre School continues to play
an important role in the program. They are enthusiastic about
sharing their expertise with both teachers and students.
Demos
Science demonstrations on Cryogenics, High Voltage
Electricity, and Comets are popular among students.
Dome
Theatre Films
Classes view a 70-mm film in Discovery Dome or a multi-media
production created by the Calgary Science Centre as part of
their week here.
Behind
the Scenes at the Science Centre
Many classes have an opportunity to visit "behind
the scenes" in the Discovery Dome.
Project
Work
Students have an opportunity to do projects not ordinarily
done in a classroom setting. Flexible time, a suitable workspace,
necessary tools and materials, and extra resources and volunteers
help make this a good learning opportunity.
Visit the TELUS World of Science for more information on exhibits, events and shows.
